Agentic Commerce HQ
What it is, who it is for, then how you turn it on.

If you shop with an AI agent

You can already ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or Amazon to find a product. Sometimes you pay in the chat. More often you still land on a normal checkout. Read the receipt. The agent is a clerk, not a friend.

What you can do today

On Amazon, Alexa for Shopping (the thing that used to be Rufus) lives in the search bar. It can compare, show price history, and, for some off-Amazon items, run Buy for Me: Amazon completes checkout on the brand site with your saved address and card. You get Amazon's confirmation screen. You can cancel on their window. That is convenient. It is also Amazon holding the session.

On ChatGPT, shopping is mostly discovery now. Instant Checkout, the "buy without leaving chat" experiment from late 2025, was pulled in March 2026. You research in the thread, then finish on the merchant's site or in an in-app browser. Shopify merchants still show up there as a referrer.

Google AI Mode and Gemini can complete a Shopify-powered checkout without bouncing you out, if the merchant left direct checkout on. That feels closer to "the agent paid." It is still the merchant of record in Shopify's writeup.

What to watch

Who charged you. Who has the return. Whether the SKU, shipping, and tax matched what the chat promised. Early Instant Checkout complaints were stale inventory and missing shipping quotes. That failure mode does not vanish because the button moved.

If you did not mean to buy, you need a cancel path you can find without asking the same model that placed the order. Amazon documents a 24-hour cancel on some auto-buy flows. Other surfaces are messier. I would not grant an agent a card with no cap.

A simple rule

Let the agent research. Confirm the last click yourself until you have used that surface enough to know how refunds work. If you sell as well as shop, the merchant page is for Shopify stores.
